La Bestia

Between 1764 and 1767 a beast, or beasts, with formidable teeth and immense tails roamed the province of Gévaudan and Vivarais, France. The animal known as The Gévaudan Beast was believed to have left 130 people dead and 70 injured. The King sent his best dragons and specialists to the territory to end the rampage. Was the animal man or beast? How has it permeated the territory and the collective unconscious? How does the region keep the myth alive? This photographic and historic work by Swen Renault is an investigation in these almost unchanged landscapes where the Beast sowed terror.
